Understand the basics of SEO

Two simple things to understand how SEO works

If you were to start looking around the web to understand how SEO works, you will find yourself quickly overwhelmed. There is a plethora of conflicting opinions, outdated facts, how to guides, and ultimately a whole bunch of people trying to sell you stuff. End of the day, there’s just two foundational concepts that you as a website owner should understand. Here’s the two concepts in a nutshell:

Concept 1

Webpages with more text content on more pages rank higher in Google and for a larger number of keywords.

Concept 2

Websites that have been linked to from other websites rank better in Google.

Let’s look at this in a little greater detail

Concept 1

Webpages with more text content rank higher in Google and for a larger number of keywords. This concept is relatively straightforward.  When somebody goes to Google and does a search, Google is trying to give them pages back that have content about that search.
So, it’s kind of a no-brainer that if you have more text content on your website, and more pages of content on your website, you’re going to ‘match’ and get found in Google for a larger number of keywords.
In addition, Google just overall favors a page with 500 words of content to a page with just 200 words of content.

Concept 2

Websites that have been linked to from other websites rank better in Google. This factor is much less understood than the first but critical to success. First of all, let’s define a link.
A link is simply a hypertext link like this one that takes you to another website (in this case https://printingpeach.ca/). Google sees that link almost like a vote for https://printingpeach.ca/. The more websites Google sees linking to (voting for) your website, the more popular they will feel your site is. So, lot’s of links to your site from other sites equals popular. Nobody linking to your site equals… not so much.
Understand, 99% of the time, no amount of text content will get you to page 1. Google needs to know your site is popular (lots of good links) before they will rank you.

NOTE: When people find this out they immediately start thinking… hmmm, I can think of various ways to get a bunch of fake links fast. This is another situation where you don’t even want to think about it. Google is really smart about the million ways in which people have tried to build fake links over the years and you’re only going to get your website penalized with Google. Actually, 95% of what you’re paying us to do is to build links to your website which will help you rather than hurt you.
